This week marked an important transition in the CalmSpace project as we moved out of the planning and documentation phase and into actual design work. CalmSpace is a mobile application focused on improving sleep quality in noisy environments through adaptive, privacy-focused sound masking. Up until now, most of the effort has been around defining scope, goals, and overall direction. This week felt like the point where the project started to become real.
My main focus was building out the CalmSpace wireframe. I worked through the core MVP user flow, including onboarding, profile creation, the initial questionnaire, the main dashboard, settings, and the active sleep session screens. At this stage, the priority wasn’t visual polish or branding, but usability and clarity. Since CalmSpace is designed to be used during low-attention moments—often right before sleep—the interface needs to feel calm, intuitive, and unobtrusive rather than busy or overly detailed.
A good portion of this work was done independently due to limited team communication during the week. That meant making reasonable assumptions, moving forward without blocking progress, and being ready to adjust once feedback became available. One teammate was especially helpful by providing targeted feedback on specific screens and taking ownership of setting up the Jira board, which helped keep things organized and made progress easier to track.
One of the bigger design challenges this week was finding the right balance between simplicity and transparency. Users need to feel confident that the app is monitoring sound locally and handling data responsibly, but they don’t necessarily want or need deep technical explanations—especially when they’re trying to fall asleep. The wireframe addresses this by using clear visual indicators, minimal text, and a layout that fades into the background once a sleep session begins.
Overall, this week reinforced how valuable strong UX artifacts can be, especially when conditions aren’t perfect. Having a clear, well-structured wireframe creates a shared reference point for the team, reduces ambiguity, and helps keep momentum going as CalmSpace moves closer to implementation. It feels like a solid foundation to build on moving forward.
